I have had some small ships come up and at the last minute they turn fire the 3 cannons they have and run like mad away from me. Most times a smaller ship will get right up to almost in gun range and then they turn away and run. If a ship turns towards me I have the crew to alert and open to cannon doors and switch to what ever side it looks like they are going to approach from. I don't know how long you fight with one ship, but i think you fight long enough to give enought time to the enemy to catch you and attack you.
